A Levels (England)
A levels in England include several subjects that have relevance to the Wars of the Roses and hence to the life and times of Richard III.
History is the principal A level subject for which resources appear in the dropdown menus of this website. There are also ideas suggested for Art, Biology, Drama, and English Literature.
We also include some suggestions for suitable EPQ topics which may also be acceptable for the ScotBac Interdisciplinary Project and the WJEC EPQ.
England is the only country in the United Kingdom which includes the Wars of the Roses as part of A level History and the three exam providers cover different time periods:
Each A-level provider has published a book which covers the course content. On each providers website are sample exam papers and access to past papers since 2017. The format of each exam has remained fairly constant over the past ten years. The first question asks for your evaluation of between one and four excerpts drawn from primary sources to address a specific question. Other questions ask for essays on the political influence of a range of key players, usually kings and senior nobles, or broad topics such as kingship, finance, causes of instabilty, during the period covered by each specification.
We provide in this website material with a focus on the Wars of the Roses with some background from the 15th century to provide context. Other websites such as TudorHistory deal with the Tudor period from 1485 onwards.
